Every new agent pays to rediscover the same codebase.
File reading and semantic retrieval can eventually reconstruct a system, but the model repeatedly spends context and time finding the same definitions, callers, boundaries, and governing docs.
Cursor, Copilot, Sourcegraph, JetBrains, CodeQL, and Semgrep each solve valuable parts of coding with AI. PX addresses a different failure: an agent can retrieve plausible context, edit code, run tests—and still be wrong about what it searched, what it missed, or what the result actually proves.
PX is the model-agnostic control plane between a question and a code change: choose the evidence lane, preserve exact anchors, expose coverage, recover from weak results, and carry receipts forward.
QUESTION → FRAME → ROUTE COURT
├─ exact graph
├─ composed flow
├─ docs evidence
└─ typed recovery

BRIEF → EDIT → VERIFY → RECEIPT
The expensive failures were not syntax errors. They were confident partial answers: the correct symbol in the wrong repository, a clean zero from an incomplete index, an HTTP or SQL boundary that disappeared between languages, or a passing test presented as proof of a larger claim.
File reading and semantic retrieval can eventually reconstruct a system, but the model repeatedly spends context and time finding the same definitions, callers, boundaries, and governing docs.
When an index is stale, an extractor is partial, or a target is ambiguous, “no results” may describe the tool’s coverage—not the repository. PX returns an evidence horizon and typed recovery instead of laundering that uncertainty.
Real systems cross TypeScript, Rust, SQL, shell, HTTP, messages, generated code, and FFI. PX normalizes specialized extractors into one evidence surface and records where each edge came from.
PX separates source, index, docs, runtime, test, and receipt evidence. The agent can still decide—but it cannot honestly pretend that one proof class establishes every other one.
PX is built for agents rather than command-line tourism. It reduces uncertainty about what evidence lane should run next while keeping deterministic structural truth, semantic relevance, documentation, and runtime observations visibly distinct.
px askNatural-language entry. RouteCourt preserves file, symbol, endpoint, table, and flow anchors.px ai for recoveryThe AnswerEnvelope helps when deterministic lanes cannot close the question. It is not a mandatory tollbooth. This is not a fake winner-take-all chart. The products below are strong at the jobs they advertise. PX is designed to sit beside them: it turns retrieval, navigation, analysis, documentation, and runtime observations into an explicit evidence and recovery contract for any agent.
| Industry surface | What it is genuinely strong at | The remaining agent problem | PX's role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor / JetBrains AI | Project-aware AI context. Cursor describes semantic codebase indexing; JetBrains Codebase Mode automatically gathers relevant project context. | Retrieved context is optimized for answering or acting. The user still needs an explicit account of the evidence lane, coverage horizon, and what a zero or omission means. | PX makes routing, target identity, coverage, weaknesses, and recovery machine-readable before the model turns context into a conclusion. |
| GitHub Copilot | Repository research, implementation planning, code changes, tests, commits, and pull-request workflows in managed execution environments. | Autonomous execution is not the same as an independent evidence contract. The agent still needs reusable proof about why it inspected those files and what its checks establish. | PX is agent-independent: Codex, Copilot, Claude, or another client can consume the same route receipts, evidence horizons, briefs, and verification packets. |
| Sourcegraph | Large-scale code search plus search-based and precise cross-repository code navigation; SCIP can provide compiler-derived definitions and references. | Precise navigation is a powerful evidence source, but an agent task also crosses docs authority, current dirty bytes, SQL/HTTP/message seams, runtime observations, planning, and post-edit verification. | PX composes those lanes and refuses to call a partial index complete. It complements precise navigation rather than pretending to outperform compiler truth. |
| CodeQL / Semgrep | Queryable program representations, data/control flow, security rules, reachability, and vulnerability triage. | These tools answer specialized analysis questions exceptionally well; they are not a general agent entry, recovery, workflow, or evidence-lineage layer. | PX can route security work to the right analyzer, retain the result’s proof class, and connect it to impact, docs, tests, permits, and closeout. |
| PX | Question framing, deterministic route arbitration, cross-lane evidence composition, current-tree coverage labels, typed recovery, and receipt-bearing agent workflows. | PX does not write the patch, replace compilers, or magically prove runtime behavior. It is only as strong as the sources and courts connected to it. | Make every agent faster to ground, harder to fool with partial evidence, easier to audit, and capable of handing the next agent a reusable proof packet. |
Competitive honesty: PX combines ideas that exist elsewhere—code graphs, semantic retrieval, static analysis, documentation search, and agent tooling. The differentiator is the product contract around them: deterministic-first routing, explicit evidence horizons, typed failure recovery, model-agnostic packets, and continuity from question through verification. Independent head-to-head productivity and accuracy benchmarks remain unknown; this page does not manufacture them.
The next generation of coding agents will not win by reading more files. They will win by knowing which evidence deserves trust, noticing when that evidence is incomplete, and carrying the proof forward after the model’s context is gone.
Most agent workflows optimize the current answer. PX optimizes the handoff between questions, tools, models, sessions, and changes so the next step starts from evidence instead of folklore.
Prompt → semantic search, grep, or file reading chosen implicitly by the agent.
With PXQuestion → preserved anchors → scored deterministic routes → explicit winner, runner-up, weaknesses, and next step.
A zero result is often displayed without the index age, extractor coverage, target ambiguity, or dirty-tree gap that produced it.
With PXEvery structural answer can expose its evidence horizon; incomplete coverage triggers typed repair or current-tree overlay rather than confident absence.
The research transcript, edit plan, test output, and final summary live in separate places and decay when the session ends.
With PXBrief → plan → simulate → verify → closeout carries target identity, proof references, risk, and result lineage across agents and time.
When a search misses, the agent quietly switches to grep and the maintainers never learn that the tool failed its real customer.
With PXRoute receipts, miss packets, transition outcomes, and adoption measures turn agent behavior into an observable surface that PX itself can improve.
The registry and generated atlas prove that the surfaces exist. Validation proves machine contracts about registered command relationships. Neither alone proves that PX beats every product, improves every task, or has complete coverage for every language and repository.
The capability inventory, registration state, runnable examples, and workflow groups are generated from px commands --all --json at build time.
px ask --json emits question framing, route receipts, target identity, results, recovery, and evidence-horizon metadata where supported.
Language families, extractors, index generations, runtime sources, and dirty-tree overlays can be partial. PX is designed to disclose that boundary; it cannot erase it.
No externally controlled benchmark yet proves a universal accuracy, speed, token, or cost advantage over Cursor, Copilot, Sourcegraph, JetBrains, CodeQL, or Semgrep.
